Dinocyon - dinopedia.fandom.com/wiki/Dinocyon Despite its name meaning "terrible dog", Dinocyon was actually a bear that roamed Eurasia during the Miocene. Its weight has been estimated at 410 kg, maybe more, and it belonged to the hemicyonine subfamily, which basically consisted of bears with somewhat longer legs and tail, and digitigrade, which gave them greater speed and agility than their modern relatives- a frightening thought considering modern bears, despite their shorter, plantigrade feet, can still chase its prey at 55 km p/h over short distances. Its dentition indicates an omnivorous diet, but its anatomy suggests it was maybe more of an active hunter compared to most modern bear species.

902 pound is closer to the weight of a large male grizzly bear.

902 pound is closer to the weight of a large male grizzly bear. You are right Old Green One; I sometimes get my Kg's confused with my pounds. I was an adult before we began using the metric system in America. Still not used to it. Glad you caught that. Dinocyon = 410 kg or 900+ pounds ( the size of a Kodiak bear ).

One known subspecies: Dinocyon thenardi
Dinocyon thenardi
Dinocyon is an extinct genus of hemicyonine bear of the Miocene epoch, endemic to Europe. It lived from around 20.3–5.3 Ma, existing for approximately 15 million years. Despite its name meaning "terrible dog", Dinocyon was actually a member of ursidae - bear family that roamed Eurasia during the Miocene. Its weight has been estimated at 410 kg ( 904 pounds ) maybe more, and it belonged to the hemicyonine subfamily, which basically consisted of bears with somewhat longer legs and tail, and digitigrade, which gave them greater speed and agility than their modern relatives- a frightening thought considering modern bears, despite their shorter, plantigrade feet, can still chase its prey at 55 km p/h over short distances.
