FULL-GROWN ADULT SLOTH BEAR ATTACKED AND BADLY INJURED BY A TIGER IN TADOBA: Nagpur: A Sloth bear was rescued by forest officials and Chandrapur NGO Eco-Pro in the buffer zone of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) on Wednesday. The eight-year old bear is undergoing treatment at the transit centre at Seminary Hills. According to deputy conservator of forests (buffer) Gajendra Narwane, the field staff at Bhuyardeo protection hut in Khadsangi buffer on late Tuesday night heard the loud noise of tiger roars and Sloth bears. Finding something fishy, on Wednesday morning the staff went to the spot and found that a bear cub was lying dead. They also noticed a full-grown bear with sluggish movement. On receiving information, Narwane, ACFs RR Kulkami, RK Sorte, wildlife vet Ravikant Khobragade and Bandu Dhotre of Eco-Pro and his team rushed to the spot with all equipment and rescued the bear. The mother bear was limping and unable to move. We immediately rescued it and sent to transit centre at Nagpur. It was a case of a tiger attack as the bear cub had canine marks on its face. We also found tiger pugmarks near the spot," said Narwane. carnivora.net/siberian-tiger-interactions-with-brown-bears-asiat-t101.htmlFrom Carnivora. The sloth bear mother was limping and unable to move but I beleive she managed to fight off the tiger although her cub was killed.

No one here has ever denied that tigers hunt and kill adult sloth bears by ambush.

Oh ok i see. So the cub was killed, but once again a bengal tiger failed to kill a mother bear.

Ok so, as stated above, those subadult and female bears coming across tiger tracks are afraid of an ambush, but tigers are afraid of face to face fights. See the huge difference guys?
sloth bear scares off the tiger when its FACE TO FACE
2 tigers wont fight a sloth bear at Ranthambor national park
Tiger tries to hunt sloth bear, when the bear comes down from the tree and actually wants to fight, the tiger runs away
Tiger tries to attack sloth bear from the back, when the bear turns around, the tiger bolted full speed
Tiger runs away from another female sloth bear with cubs

Nice find. In this case, I must agree sub-adult tigers and tigress. Bears are tough; but a tiger is no joke.

Anytime that a tiger faces a sloth bear and does not kill the sloth bear, the bear defeated the tiger. Why? Because the objective of the bear is to defend itself from the predator. If the bear is not killed, then he is successful - the winner. A tiger is a full-time predator. Tigers eat bears. If a tiger faces a bear, and does not kill the bear, then the tiger is unsuccessful - the loser.

Yeah, the tiger tried to kill the sloth bear cub, the mother appeared and a 15 minute face to face fight happened. At the end, the tiger lost stamina and ran away. Whoever runs away loses. Simple.

I just finished; spent the last several hours sifting through "Tiger vs Grizzly" for tiger/sloth bear interaction. Honestly, the tiger fan-boys like to post "Bengal Tiger vs Grizzly" as a topic... because they view the Bengal as their "super tiger".... not giving a thought that a Bengal tiger cannot kill a sloth bear half the tiger's weight in a face-off. The sloth bear is the least muscular of all bears - the grizzly the most muscular of all living bears.

To be honest, having the 2 separate topics "Amur tiger vs grizzly" and "Bengal tiger vs Grizzly" is just stupid to me. Because in any of those topics we are already playing with the different weights of the animals. The difference between Amurs and Bengals is just weight basically, no much more than that. So both topics wont be much different.
Anyhow, we already know the score up to now in accounts:
BROWN BEARS-4 BENGAL TIGERS-0

Sloth bear vs tiger, lets analyze this:
Bengal tigers hunt sloth bears, not many adult males though, i havent seen this much.
When the interaction is face to face, we can see by many videos that the tigers run away. Also, Biologist Yoganand stated that when Bengal tigers and sloth bears meet, its usually a draw.
But, if we would put an adult male Bengal tiger vs an adult male sloth bear inside a cage and they have to fight to death, the tiger should win this at least 7/8 out of 10.

Only in the wild can we see the true nature of each apex predator. The sloth bear is the "little kid on the playground" who has the heart to stand his ground. The tiger is the big "playground bully" who likes to attack other kids but is not seeking a fair fight.

So we have the Singinawa jungle lodge reservations, in India, i guess a park ranger answered you correct? The guy said that "the bear mostly has the upper hand in a tiger vs bear duel"
Thats very interesting Smedz, very nice. Less than 1 year ago, i think we all thought that Bengal tigers dominated sloth bears even in direct confrontations, but since then, we have a biologist that said that when they meet its usually a draw, now we have a park ranger (i guess) stating that the sloth bear usually has the upper hand, and we have plenty of videos confirming all this. We have really come a long way with sloth bears.

I see things in a different light, as I've mentioned before. Tigers eat bears. If there is a face-off confrontation between a tiger and a sloth bear, it is the tiger's objective to kill the bear. The sloth bear merely wishes to survive a confrontation. Therefore, if the sloth bear manages to defend himself against the tiger, then the bear is successful. If the tiger does not kill the bear and walks away, then the tiger failed in his mission.
