Right, but when its strictly a face to face situation, its the tiger that retreats most times. Plenty of videos show this. True; tigers are strictly ambush predators.

It is not a surprise. The sloth bear is just defensively aggressive 😁.

Some nice pictures here - news.mongabay.com/2018/03/epic-battle-between-tiger-and-sloth-bear-caught-on-film/ Epic battle between tiger and sloth bear caught on film by Mongabay.com on 3 March 2018 | A naturalist at an ecotourism lodge in India has captured footage of a battle between a tiger and a mother sloth bear protecting its cub. Akshay Kumar, the chief naturalist at Bamboo Forest Safari Lodge in Maharashtra, shot the video during an afternoon safari on Wednesday in Tadoba National Park. The video starts with the tiger — a well-known dominant male named Matkasur — chasing off a sloth bear that was headed toward a water hole with her cub. The bear then charges the tiger and the fight ensues. Kumar told NDTV that the bear’s attack was “motherly instinct”. “The tiger attacked the bear more than five minutes. It went after the sloth bear but she kept charging in order to protect her cub,” Kumar told NDTV. “It went on for 15 minutes. The tiger was roaring. It was a severe fight.” Both animals were injured in the encounter. Kumar said the bear’s thick fur saved her from a worse outcome. Note: this was a mother bear against a full-grown male Bengal tiger. Quote: ” Kumar told NDTV. “It went on for 15 minutes. The tiger was roaring. It was a severe fight.” Both animals were injured in the encounter. *Consider that this big male tiger fought this sloth bear sow for 15 minutes and was unable to kill her in a fair fight, even with a weight advantage of no less than 100 pounds. There is no doubts in my mind that a grizzly could dispatch a sloth bear in a short-minute.

I think it was already posted here sometime ago. The sloth bear killing a Bengal tiger seems to have been unconfirmed. Regardless sloth bears are given a wide breathe by tigers in general.

Tiger fans insist that the tigers unable to kill a female sloth bear in a face-to-face confrontation are all young tigers. Wrong. This fight has been discussed before; but here it is again to make a point. news.mongabay.com/2018/03/epic-battle-between-tiger-and-sloth-bear-caught-on-film/ Epic battle between tiger and sloth bear caught on film - by Mongabay.com on 3 March 2018 Footage of a fight between a male tiger and a mother sloth bear in an India wildlife reserve has gone viral on Facebook. ( IMO ) the dominant male tiger gave-up because of his lesser stamina. He "ran out of steam."

Reply #190, yes, we have all those accounts posted already in this thread. By the way, that guy at Quora Joshua James is Rorqual who has not posted in forums since March.

Reply #184: We have watched numerous videos of the female sloth bear who courageously stands-up to a tiger and the tiger finally walks away rather that risk a face-to-face fight. Thus, as we have often discussed, the big white "V". Only in two incidents have we seen a tiger actually fight the she-bear ( its always a female bear in the videos ). In both cases, the tiger was a big prime male. In only one, the tiger managed to kill the sloth bear. In the other incident, the female sloth bear manages to defend herself until the tiger's stamina reaches its limit. The totally exhausted tiger then walks away from his would-be prey. *Yes; we have gone through this on numerous occasion. However... here is the fanboy's version. R.U.ready? *The tiger never really wanted to kill and eat the bear.

And here is the smart tiger fan version:
WOLVERINE
Probably not only big male bears but any adult male brown bear. If the adult male tiger Matkasur weighting 200-220 kg from the famous video didn't succeed to overwhelm a smallish female Sloth bear weighting only 90-100 kg (that's the average mass of the female) and actually lost the battle how come a tiger can be stronger than adult male Ussuri brown bear with average weight of 270 kg... ?. That's unthinkable. Its time for us - tiger lovers and lion lovers to open our eyes in the front of the truth and admit that the brown bear is way stronger than any cat. Sadly. Nevertheless the obligatory predators as the big cats somehow are much more charismatic and excite human imagination much more than the omnivorus animals.

This post by Wolverine ( a big cat enthusiast ) is perhaps the best said post ever written on this topic. I would love to have this on the top of our cover page ( although it might cause some hard feelings aimed towards Wolverine from the nut-case fanboys ). Here lies the difference between an honest intelligent big cat enthusiast and a juvenile fanboy.

There is probably like one source saying tigers fight with sloth bears and tiger fans will use that to "debunk" all of these sources.

There is probably like one source saying tigers fight with sloth bears and tiger fans will use that to "debunk" all of these sources. Well, we have several videos depicting a female sloth bear standing her ground against a tiger and the tiger refusing to fight. Each time the tiger was attempting to stalk the bear with the agenda of ambush. But in each separate case, the bear spotted the big cat and stood her ground. We have also witnessed on video sloth bear who panicked and ran. In this case, the tiger will usually chase and catch the bear and kill her. We have only the two cases on video where the male tiger decided to fight the female sloth bear. ( Reply #193 ).

The only time ( caught on video ) that the tiger fights and kills the sloth bear - the only encounter they accept.
