www.bear.org/website/the-nabc/meet-our-bears/teds-page/95-how-big-is-ted.html EmailPrint How Big is Ted? Ted may be the largest black bear that ever lived In fall 2006, Ted weighed an estimated 950 to 1000 pounds. That estimate is based on the following. In fall 2006, bear expert Jeff Traska saw Ted in Ted's lifelong Wisconsin home and estimated him at over 900 pounds. Ted then went into hibernation and lost weight over winter. A 20% loss would be expected, which would be between 180 and 200 pounds. When Ted arrived here at the North American Bear Center in late April 2007, he still had a huge belly. The caretakers restricted his food intake and made him work harder for his food than he had ever worked before. Over the summer, they watched Ted's belly shrink and watched him become lighter on his feet. On November 21, 2007, Ted was as lean as ever, and he weighed 860.5. One can only speculate what Ted weighed back in the fall of 2006 before his hibernation and diet. The estimate of 950 to 1,000 pounds does not seem out of line. If that is true, Gentle Ted may be the largest black bear that ever lived. The Heaviest Black Bear on Record The heaviest wild black bear ever reported was killed a century ago in Arizona. It weighed a disputed 902 pounds. The heaviest black bear reliably weighed was an 880-pound 10-year-old male killed in Craven County, North Carolina, in November 1998. A close second was an 876-pound 12-year-old male weighed right here in St Louis County, Minnesota, on September 5, 1994. Also in the region, an 856.5-pound bear was killed by a car near Winnipeg, Canada, in 2001. An 802-pound bear was killed in Wisconsin in 1885. Other captive bears may have exceeded these weights because of their constant food supply, but we have found no records confirming that.

HERE ARE 13 OF THE BIGGEST BLACK BEARS EVER HUNTEDWhile black bears don't generally grow as large as their brown, grizzly and polar bear cousins, these brutes can get pretty monstrous and scary. Adult black bears typically weigh between 100 and 500 pounds. Anything over that and we're talking humongous territory. But even a 600-pound bear isn't too uncommon. Wikipedia says that, "The biggest wild American black bear ever recorded was a male from New Brunswick, shot in November 1972, that weighed 902 lb after it had been dressed, meaning it weighed an estimated 1,100 lb in life, and measured (7.9 ft long.)." And they're all over. From Georgia to the Western Canadian provinces, and from the Montana foothills to suburban New Jersey, black bears cover a wide range of North American habitat. Here's a random sampling of some of the biggest big black bears that made us drop our jaws. Check out the most humongous black bears. 704-pound black bear.
Biggest Black Bears The Welsboro Gazette 704-pound black bear taken in Pennsylvania by 21-year-old Tyler Wilbur of Annville, Pennsylvania. It is his first black bear and had a chest girth of 64 inches. Tyler stalked the bear in a harvested corn field to take a perfect shot with his crossbow. To give you an idea of proportion and size, Tyler is 6 feet 2 inches tall. 610 pounds...Still a big bear

His skull measured 20 5/16, making the B & C Awards minimum of 20 inches. Both measurements are more common for a grizzly bear than a black bear. We guesstimate the bear's age at over 20 years. What a wonderful experience!" - Bob Keagy Steve and Lorrie Dougherty with Steve's 21 1/16 Boone and Crockett Club black bear.

An 1100 lb. Black Bear, geez... that likely would be equivalent to a 1600 lb Kodiak bear maybe even more if comparing record sizes for wild Bears.

It's interesting that the picture above is of a black bear from North Carolina, specifically coastal North Carolina. In the link below the claim is made that Coastal North Carolina is home to the largest Black Bears in the world. Not sure if I completely agree or not as Large and I mean some very large Blackies have been recorded in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Brunswick and many of the other Canadian Provinces and including Alaska. bear-ology.org/BearFacts-Largest.aspx

The bear’s size didn’t surprise at least one hunting advocate, who said the high weight was the result of state restrictions on hunting that allow bears to multiply and get dangerously big. To determine if the bear was a record, the Pope and Young Club hosted a special panel for judging in Harrisburg on Feb. 8 during the Great American Outdoors Show. Pope and Young, based in Minnesota, says it is recognized as the official repository for records on bow-taken North American big-game animals. It maintains a scoring system and sets standards. “It has been an inspiring journey, to say the least,” Melillo said in a Pope and Young release. “New Jersey, my home state, has its first-ever world record animal!” The bear was shot Oct. 14. It surpassed the previous world-record bear, shot by Robert J. Shuttleworth Jr. in Mendocino County, Calif., on Sept. 4, 1993, according to Pope and Young. Melillo told Pope and Young that he had read an article in Outdoor Life stating that a world-record black bear would likely come someday from New Jersey. “They were spot on, and I never doubted it for one second. I’m very grateful that I get to be a part of all this. Pursuing bears with bow and arrow is a passion of mine,” he said.

It’s such a shame that these people would shoot down an exceptionally large American black bear. This is no different from killing exceptionally large kodiak and polar bears 😡.

A natural predator will never choose the biggest strongest animal as potential prey. The predator is looking for a meal; not a fight. But the human hunter is mostly seeking something that will inflate his ego. A trophy. ( but there are a few exceptions to the rule ). Very few.

Probably more common than 1760 pound male polar bears. Back to black bears, I think they are actually capable of sustaining heavier weights than tigers and lions despite the fact these bears only average 300 pounds (for males).
