Years ago ( decades actually ), while doing some thinking, I came to the conclusion that humans of the late Pleistocene were probably the smartest that man-kind has ever been. Smarter than modern man. Why? Because he had to figure things out. No books. No kept records. No matches. No steel blade. He has to do everything on-his-own, in a very extreme environment. Just a few years back; my theory was proven correct... by studies done by anthropologists. My new theory: This computer-age will set man-kind back in terms of intelligence. With information at our fingertips, we use our brains less. Just found this: achnews.org/2019/12/27/stanford-doctor-says-human-intelligence-peaked-thousands-of-years-ago-and-weve-been-a-decline-ever-since/?fbclid=IwAR0htdonK4qfgTroQEQlidoRisvlMNrAdVXJbiCePoyfH2SvHD_3Bv8MqMI “Human intelligence peaked thousands of years ago and we’ve been on a decline ever since.” Intelligence can be defined as the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills. I can walk into my house, tell Alexa to turn the music on, hit my Apple watch and fix the temperature just right. I’m sure there’s gotta be some gadget that will cook my dinner at the sound of my voice and then, with the touch of a button, motor around and vacuum my floor. Intelligence, right? Or, are we confusing intelligence with something that looks like intelligence?

Apes and monkeys are among the most intelligent mammals.

Apes and monkeys are among the most intelligent mammals. Science has yet to discover an accurate method of measuring intelligence; but we know that on the top level ( just below man-kind ) are the whales and dolphins, bears, great apes, corvus ( ravens and crows ), and the elephants. These in unknown order. There may possibly be a few others in this top level. Monkeys just below this level. Possibly the wolf and hyena also on second level. ( IMHO ).

This thread is excluding bears so I cant say anything about bears Just a wild guess but I don't think Kodiak was referring to Bears that made him laugh. It would be a suicidal Lion Pride that would attempt to take down an adult African Elephant, Hippo, Rhino. Calves yes, possibly a sub adult, but not adults.

qwaszx! Tigers, jaguars, pumas, leopards: All top-notch predators with absolutely amazing physical abilities but... "Boss of the Woods" the Grizzly is the Achilles' heel of the Big Cats.

As for being "fighters" I have to agree. A face-to-face confrontation is simply not in their nature.
