Yeah. It is sad. Mankind does not know how to take care of the environment.

Question; does the climate of the high arctic change with the seasons? Sweden reaches slightly more than 20 degrees in the summer, therefore summer in the arctic should be colder. The climate does change as the ice pack does melt during summer.

Quote: "The size of a polar bear outside its natural environment." Polar bears are larger in most zoos today than they were in captivity during the 1800s and early-to-mid 1900s.

Because of Animal Right Acts. Nevertheless, a captive polar bear will never be as healthy as a wild polar bear. Same goes with cetaceans.

What's the average weight for polar bears in the wild domainofthebears.proboards.com/thread/773/weight-collection?page=1 ( Like the brown bear, a male polar bear is not a full-grown bear until he is at least 9 years old ) Average mature male polar bear (6 years+) - 1075 pounds. Average mature female polar bear (5 years+) - 485 pounds. Average mature male Foxe Basin polar bear (5 years+) - 1300 pounds.

The note you cite above (about the polar bear vs tiger fight) is from the early 20th century. The point is not only that then journalists checked information worse than now. The main thing is that at that time the circus did not perform with adult male polar bears. There are few such cases in history, and the German trainer in the photo above is a rare exception. I know one more exception in the modern Russian circus, when a 400 kg male polar bear performed there, but in the circus they clearly advertised themselves that this is a rarity. So you can be sure that this "biggest bear" is a female. And the outcome of a duel in captivity between a polar bear sow and a tiger/lion, as we know, can be different. carnivora.net/siberian-tiger-v-polar-bear-sow-t8456-s120.html#p224220An interesting feedback given by a new poster on Carnivora. Interested to know what everybody here thinks. It seems that the large male polar bears (400kg and above) in circus advertise on posters are a rarity to attract visitors.

In the 19th century and probably in the early 20th century, some male polar bears were used in circus acts, but those bears were stunted in size. Photos show that they were in the size-range of American black bears. shaggygod.proboards.com/thread/798/historical-accounts-bears-big-interactions?page=1

In other words, after nearly 200 years of being kept in zoos, the "experts" have still not developed a healthy diet for captive polar bears.
