"It all depends upon what kind of medicine man the patient is seeing for what kind of sickness or problem. A Bear medicine man, who has his primary power from the Bear, specializes in broken bones, torn ligaments, arthritis, wounds, and deseases. A Rattlesnake medicine man specializes in Snakebites, bug bites, and skin problems. An Elk medicine man has the gift and knowledge to specialize in emotions, family problems, love matters, women's illnesses and so forth. Different medicine men might specialize in witchcraft and handle psychological problems involving ghosts, bad spirits, andevil forces. Their main power might be the Owl, Blue Jay, Spiders, Snakes, Water Dog ( salamander ), or Skunk, for example. And they might even doctor." Note: as you can see, Call of the Great Spirit - The Shamanic Life and Teachings of Medicine Grizzly Bear - by Bobby Lake-Thom. is not about bears, but shamanism. But, from this point forward, I will relate only that which has to do with bears.

His pipe was also tubular and appeared to have a small stone bowl on the end of it. It is the custom and habit of most medicine men to share their "peace pipe" in prayer with the patient and company, so I found it strange that Wahsek did not offer to share his pipe with me to smoke. He then proceeded to talk in his language in what appeared to be a conversation with the Great Creator and spirits. I could feel an eerie heaviness coming over me, as if I had been drugged, to the point that his speech seemed garbled. He said, "As I told you earlier, sometimes a person can become sick and in pain because he has violated the Creator's Laws or Natural Laws of the Universe, so what do you know about Bears?"

"I don't understand," I remarked slowly, trying to think. "I don't know what all this would have to do with a Bear." "The spirit of the Bear is very angry with you. Evidently you have abused and violated it, so it has been stalking you, tormenting you, clawing and gnawing you apart in an effort to get your attention." All of a sudden we heard the dogs begin to bark wildly. Then came the loud, wild growling of a large animal just beyond the front door. At first I was scared, but then I figured it had to be the medicine man using ventriloquism. "What I am talking about is this," he continued to say firmly. "Is it true or not true that you have a Bear hide, Bear claws, Bear teeth, and related power objects?"

The growling got louder and closer while the dogs barked and growled back more viciously, and all this was going on while the medicine man was still talking. "Have you ever eaten Bear meat?" he asked loudly. "If so, would you please tell the Creator and spirits here when you did it. You owe them a very sincere apology, otherwise I don't think I am going to be able to help you get rid of this disease. You see, its like this. If you ate Bear meat that was not hunted with the proper ceremony, or if you ate Bear meat that was cooked and handled by women on their moontime, then you have violated the Natural Law. The Bear has power, more power than most animals, and there are spiritual laws involving the use of such power. And that Bear can be very mean when he wants to be. If you violate him he is going to let you know it, sooner or later."

Wow. Very interesting Brobear. Sounds a little like the book The Fallen King to me.

On into the book, Call of the Great Spirit, After a few long pages of rituals... I was starting to shake all over and cry. A feeling of remorse enveloped me that was beyond shame, guilt, and embarrassment. The truth hit like a force beyond comprehension and for some strange reason everything he said made sense to me. Suddenly all hell broke loose. A series of large growls started outside the front door. Something huge was slamming up against it, clawing, pushing, and pounding violently. Terrified, we all turned our attention to the door, wondering if it would hold whatever was out there trying to force its way in. The door was ripped off its hinges and slammed up against the wall. A large black bear came slowly walking in. His big, white teeth were flashing with foam, slobber was running down his jaws, and he was shaking his head back and forth in anger. There wasn't the slightest doubt in my mind that this awesome beast was real, and that he was coming after me. He didn't stare at anyone else, only me, and I felt a hot burst of Crap splatter into my shorts as I shook in fear, desperately looking for a place to run and hide. *Note: to be continued.

On the outside, I think very evidently a bear represents strenght and raw power.
Looking at it from a more subtle perspective, I also find on a bear the sort of humbleness, of quiet and tranquility that some other characters don't show so often, like for example lions would, who are all constant fire and unlimited conquest.
And also, I think they're a perfect role model for the lone man that many of us are. We humans are social creatures, so much like lions and wolves in that respect, we can't escape that, but on occasions we find ourselves in the position of the lone man and I think a bear sets a very nice example for us(the other one would be the leopard).

I agree Gurahl. We are rather in the middle. We enjoy companionship and our group gatherings, but we also greatly prize our personal time alone. I am more loner than groupie, but not a hermit either.

For bear symbolism, the bear is considered to be important in California. After all, it's on their state flag!

For bear symbolism, the bear is considered to be important in California. After all, it's on their state flag! The California grizzly ( golden bear ) was the biggest and fiercest bear in the lower 48 and possibly in all of North America. But, unfortunately for the bear, they were exterminated before any scientific studies could be made. Ironic that the people of Old California would make the grizzly their symbol as they hated this bear so much that they killed all of them.
