Does everybody have their favorite Bear documentary. I would have to say my absolute favorite is Discovery channels "The Great Bear Stakeout". The documentary gives us a glimpse into the world of the Alaskan coastal bears. A world often times harsh and extremely brutal as was depicted in certain segments. I thought John Goodman was terrific in his narration and loved the names given to each bear along with their personalities. The Van and Alice stormy romance was especially entertaining. Another rather frightening scene is when Van is approaching the camera crew on the beach and closes to within yards before turning the other way. Camera crew were on their knees with Bear spray in hands. Guarantee some of those boys had a change of shorts afterward. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0176qj5

That is a great documentary. The big boar, if I remember right, they called him "Van" because of his size. Sadly but interesting too, for reasons I could not understand, Van kills a 500 pound she-bear. The she-bear was killed in a matter of seconds. I will search for my favorite documentary which shows a Yellowstone grizzly that purposely skips hibernation and spends the entire winter following a wolf pack. I can't stress this often enough; grizzlies are extremely individualistic animals. There is no such animal as an "average grizzly".

"Polar Bear: Spy on the Ice" was a good (yet sad) documentary about the daily life, seasonal life, and deadly struggles of polar bears from a camera's perspective. It was released in 2011 and is even on Netlix.
My second favorite is a short 30-minute, but interesting snipping into a young grizzly's life called "Bear 71" where they radio-collar a young brown bear and track him over a period of hours.
True that bear documentaries aren't nearly as famed as big cat documentaries.

If anyone knows of some good ones coming up please post dates and times.
At 1am central this morning I'm recording a Nat Geo Wild episode of America the wild "Grizzly Country". Casey Anderson lives along Yellowstone's endangered grizzly population for a year.

I just have to make mention of this Documentary "Grizzly Empire" again. I don't recall ever being moved, almost "horrified" by a scene in this Documentary than anything I've watched to date.
Let's just say that according to the narration this behavior of one particular she bear has never been witnessed by anyone before. A Mother bear goes from having 3 cubs down to 1 cub in a matter of minutes. "Heartbreaking" but 50% of Brown bear cubs don't survive for one reason or another to see their 1st birthday .
If you can manage to find someplace online to watch this you will likely feel as I did.

I found a clip of what I was referring to although it doesn't show the aftermath which is really gut wrenching.
Let me set the scene. Spoiler alert !!. Two females each with 3 cubs are being pursued by are large male "Andre" up a high bank with cliffs. They are forced to fight him off and succeed. At the same time two of the cubs from one female fall off the cliff and one dies, the other breaks his front leg. One female (not the mother of the fallen cubs) decides that Andre needs another lessen and pursues him to the beach below where she (in a rage) fights like her life depends on it. He could have killed her but she's in a rage and drives him away and soon spots the little cub with the broken leg limping down the shoreline and pursues him. This is where the scene comes in.
Nobody seems to know why she did this. The narrator only mentions that she was in a rage after just fighting Andre and she saw this cub running away which may have triggered her prey drive. Who knows. This behavior from a sow has never been witnessed before. After she kills the cub she returns to the cliffs to retrieve her 3 cubs while the other female (who witnessed her cub being killed ) is still there with her 1 remaining male cub and a fight ensues between the two. Unbelievable....

Yes, I do remember this documentary. IF I had to choose just one thing that I do not like about my favorite animal... not really the same as this... it is the lack of family. There is mother bear and her cubs. The big boar has nothing to do with his own offspring. -sad.

For those who get NatGeo wild, a new weekly series called Alaska's Grizzly Gauntlet starring survivalists Les Stroud. Friday's 9/8 Central.
www.fox.com/alaskas-grizzly-gauntlet/I watched the first episode last Friday called "Kodiak Kings". I have my DVR set to record this weekly.
Here's a clip from Kodiak Kings.

Just watched episode 2 "Ice Bear Siege". As expected Les Stroud does a very good job in a slightly different endeaver than were used to seeing him in as a survivalist show host. I'm really liking this new series. 👍

I thought I'd post this 60 minute special here as I just love watching really well done documentaries on Bears. Listening to Doug and Lynn Seus talk about Bart and Bears in general. Very emotional when Lynn talks about having to put Bart down as is with any pet owner who fully understands what that's like, including yours truly.

Bear bandit raids Siberian ranger hut in search of… a newspaper? (VIDEO) In a highly entertaining video a bold brown bear was caught burglarizing a ranger hut in Siberia's Sayano-Shushenskiy Nature Reserve only to become extremely distracted by a newspaper. The ranger hut on the banks of the Sinyaya river is so remote it's only visited once or twice a year, which is why the hilarious surveillance video footage only emerged in recent weeks. Tidying up huts is what brown bears typically do in taiga,” a message from the nature reserve read, as cited by The Siberian Times. “They can’t resist strong, unusual smells and often climb into wooden houses through windows, turning everything upside down… This time the bear got interested in a newspaper and spent some minutes tearing it to pieces after getting out of the house.” www.rt.com/russia/453654-brown-bear-newspaper-video-siberia/amp/
