Bears, especially Polar bears, Brown bears and both Black bear species, are very combative in frequent fights:

According to the famous animal trainer, Clyde beatty, bears are more dangerous than lions, tigers, leopards or panthers.
No matter how combative are lions; they are still cats. And just like all other cats, are prefer ambush than fight, a behaviour not found among bears. And here is the proof why, as below it is shown that in order to decrease lion attacks on cattle, scientists painted to cow's butt to diminish the ambush attack chance making lions not to attack them which shows lions arn't mostly willing to attack head-on like bears. “Lions are ambush predators that rely on stalking, and therefore the element of surprise, so being seen by their prey can lead to them abandoning the hunt,” says joint UNSW Science and Taronga Western Plains Zoo researcher Dr Neil Jordan."

Here are the final points we conclude logically from this thread:
1. Brown bears always defeated African lions in ancient Roman arenas (Pastoreau, Wayne)
2. Grizzly bears always defeated African lions in Californian pit fights (Tahoe tales and Landscape book)
3. Adult Cave bears always killed adult male and female Cave lions in prehistoric cave (BBC, Cajus G. Diedrich)
4. Steppe brown bears kleptoparasited Cave lions while North American Short-faced bears kleptoparasited on American lions (Diedrich, Leidy, Wayne, BBC)
5. Cave bears were atypical prey for cave lions. Mostly cubs were hunted by adult males in hibernation periods (BBC, Goldfuss, Adrian Marciszak, Cajus G. Diedrich)
6. Brown bear and Polar bears can defeat African lions in fair fights (Franck, Wayne, E. Bowles, Barner, Rossevelt)
7. The real King of the beasts is Brown bear, not lion (David Earl Brown, Albert Evans, Clyde beatty)
8. There are many accounts of bears killing or defeating bears in captive fights (Accounts)
9. Even the largest of the Cave bears never stood a chance against an adult male Cave bear (Adrian Marciszak, Argant, Diedrich)
10. Bears are better fighters and are more dangerous than lions (Morphological studies, Lewis and Clark)
