Biologists only refer to the bears of the Kodiak Islands as Kodiak bears. The all other brown bears of the N. American mainland as grizzlies; although the big coastal brown bears are generally called just that, coastal brown bears. Rather confusing. However, hunters generally refer to the coastal brown bears as being Kodiak bears ( Boone and Crockett Club ). *They are all brown bears ( Ursus arctos ). Why do hunters refer to coastal brown bears as kodiaks?

/\ A lot of hunters can be uninformed. Correct me if I am wrong.

Sometimes they just use that general term for the huge brown bears.

Sometimes they just use that general term for the huge brown bears. Like the old story of the man and son who witnessed the fight between a Kodiak bear and a moose. Either the tale is fiction or the "Kodiak bear" was an Alaskan peninsula brown bear. There are no moose on Kodiak Island.

When you realize you are not the top of the food chain in Alaska...

I have always knew the paws of these brown bears were bigger than human’s feet but seeing the size comparison for real makes you just say, “Wow!”

Reply #406, most likely that is a front paw judging by the length of the claws. Awesome.

That's awesome mate. The report also talks about brown bears in other parts of Alaska. Northcentral Alaska and Western brooks range.

Does anyone have the bite force of a Kodiak bear? According to a source on Wildfact, it is 930 psi slightly stronger than a brown bear at 850 but weaker than a grizzly bear at 1200 pounds. wildfact.com/forum/topic-the-strongest-bites-in-the-animal-kingdomHow accurate is that? I always thought the Kodiak bear should have the stronger bite force due to being a brown bear subspecies which is larger than a grizzly.

OldGreenGrolar : Dont even worry about that source, its just a random unreliable website of the 25 strongest bite forces, its not a scientific study. You can tell that they put "brown bear", "grizzly bear", and "Kodiak bear" separated while in reality they are all brown bears. If they separated it by subspecies, than what's a brown bear? Lmao. How can a grizzly bite harder than a kodiak or a polar bear who are twice his weight?
For bite foces, this is the most reliable study that we have:

Reply 417: These captive Kodiak bears are actually huge. In captivity, the heaviest bears are brown bears not the polar bear.
