Pigeons and doves look so much alike. Just for fun, can anybody tell the difference between the two?

Well.... aside from the many different species of doves and pigeons, Pigeons are a larger bird, possibly almost twice the size.

Pigeons and doves look so much alike. Just for fun, can anybody tell the difference between the two? Both look very similar but are different. Our have some pegions tamed and i have seen doves flying in the sky. Both look very similar but are different also as pegions are larger than doves.

Out of the three, the mandarin duck is my favourite. My favourite bird is the mountain blue bird and the lappet faced vulture.

Well.... aside from the many different species of doves and pigeons, Pigeons are a larger bird, possibly almost twice the size. With never researching, I've always figured that a pigeon is a form of domesticated dove. ? The most common pigeons we se in urban and rural areas are simply a feral rock pigeon and they're wild. These are the ones you see roosting on buildings or barns etc.. www.pigeonrescue.org/resources/types-of-pigeons/People also raise pigeons however and they are referred to homing or racing pigeons and are exceptional flyers and can find their destination thousands of miles away if trained to do so. When I took my pointing dogs in to a trainer he used homing pigeons (a pigeon coop full of them) to train the dogs to be steady while on point. He used a contraption called a bird launcher that was controlled by a remote. He would hide several of these launchers in the grass in a large field marking them with a piece of surveyors tape. Then he would bring the dog in from down wind or cross wind till the dog winded the pigeon. The dog goes on point. Since the launcher with a pigeon in it is hidden the dog must rely on his nose. Then he has someone kick around the grass simulating a hunter trying to flush game to entice the dog to move, if he does move before he is released the launcher is triggered and the Pigeon flies away. The dog soon learns if he moves the bird flies away, game over. Those homers are good flyers and then proceed to find their way back to the pigeon coop to be used another day. The pigeon coop could be miles away but find their way back which has always amazed me.

Well.... aside from the many different species of doves and pigeons, Pigeons are a larger bird, possibly almost twice the size. Pegions are also bolder than doves especially when there is food available.

The dodo is a giant flightless member of the pegion family. They are no bigger than a turkey.

OldGreenGrolar Found something for you from Will Troyer's book:
Another distant traveler is the bar-tailed godwit. It is thought to take the longest single-flight migration over water of any bird, travelling from New Zealand to Alaska, a distance of nearly seven thousand miles.

www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/07/210707112556.htm Researchers detail the most ancient bat fossil ever discovered in Asia. "These teeth look intermediate, in between what we would expect a bat ancestor to look like -- and in fact, what a lot of early Cenozoic insectivorous mammals to do look like -- and what true bat looks like," Jones said. "So, they have some features that are characteristic of bats that we can point to and say, 'These are bats.' But then they have some features that we can call for simplicity's sake 'primitive.'" The researchers said the new fossils help fill in a gap to understanding the evolution of bats, which remains a puzzle to experts -- and could teach us more about mammals in general.
