The Grizzly Book by Jack Samson - The Big skull by Grancel Fitz.
In the case of bears, it wasn't hard to find. The world's record grizzly skull is in the National Museum in Washington. Since ( brown ) bears may live for 40 years or more, unless somebody shoots them, and since they keep getting bigger until they die, it is a fairly safe bet that this old monster was born in the great days of the bison, at least a century ago.
The Grizzly by Enos A. Mills.
The grizzly always appears larger than he really is. The average weight is between three hundred and fifty to six hundred pounds; males weigh a fourth more than females. Few grizzlies weigh more than seven hundred pounds, though exceptional specimens are known to have weighed more than one thousand. Adams gave the weight of "Samson," a California grizzly, as fifteen hundred pounds, and a few Alaskan grizzlies, judging by their skins, may have weighed more than "Samson." It may be that years ago, when not so closely hunted, the grizzly lived longer and grew to a larger size than he attains today.

The big bruin was observed near the Birch Creek Colony and members attempted to deter the bear from residential areas. The bear instead ran into and would not leave a garage despite efforts to haze it, according to FWP. “The cornered bear would not leave the garage despite efforts to haze it out. We quickly responded and tranquilized this male bear, which weighed over 900 pounds. Members of the colony said the bear wasn't causing any problems -- that it just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Wesley Sarmento, FWP bear management specialist. Sarmento said it took six people with a tarp to move the bear, which is large even by Montana standards. It was relocated to Pike Creek west of East Glacier. “We applaud the colony for calling to receive FWP assistance, which kept people safe and the bear uninjured,” FWP said. FWP encourages hunters and other outdoor recreationists to carry bear spray in case of encounters with bears or mountain lions.

As I was posting on the topic Recommended Books, I was remembering that historically in the lower 48, the Rocky Mountain grizzlies were not considered as big grizzlies when compared to those of the prairie or the Sierra Navada Mountains. Today, those all grizzlies of the lower 48 are Rocky Mountain grizzlies. All others were exterminated many years ago.

www.outdoorhub.com/stories/2014/10/16/4-largest-bears-ever-taken-hunters/ Grizzly bear Grizzly bears are another subspecies of brown bear. But while Alaskan brown bears live on the coast, grizzlies live inland and over time have adapted to the the unique environments they live in. These adaptations have led to smaller bears. North American brown bears that aren’t shot in coastal areas are considered grizzlies, and their recorded sizes show it. Seventeen of the top 25 grizzlies were taken in, you guessed it, Alaska. Seven were taken in British Columbia and the remaining one was taken in the Yukon. The largest Grizzly bear skull on record was not taken by a hunter, but was found dead near Lone Mountain, Alaska by Gordon Scott in 1976. It scored 27 13/16. The largest taken by a hunter, a 27 6/16 giant, was shot by Larry Fitzgerald in 2013 on the Totatlanika River, Alaska. In third place is Rodney Debias’ 27 3/16 bear shot on the Unalakleet River Alaska in 2009. Big grizzly bears are being shot every year in Alaska and British Columbia, and a new world’s record could show up at any time.

They need to stop that now. I agree wholeheartedly. ( quote ). The largest Grizzly bear skull on record was not taken by a hunter, but was found dead near Lone Mountain, Alaska by Gordon Scott in 1976. It scored 27 13/16. That found skull was from a grizzly dated back to the days when the great bears were hunting bison. Probably just a typical-sized bear of his time but bigger than our record-sized bears of today.

Speaking of the size of Ursus arctos. We all ( posters ) like to see and talk about huge brown bears. We love the giants, like those on Kodiak Island. We love to read about the big grizzlies who were wrestling with bison and killing horses and cattle in the Old West. But when we read about extinction, it is usually the giants who are first to fall. But, among the many survival skills of Ursus arctos is his "size-range-morphology". Where food availability is poor, a mature male brown bear can average below 300-pounds. Example: Himalayan red bear ( Baloo ). Of course, the biggest living today is the Kodiak bear; the average mature male averages 800+ pounds. This "size-range-morphology" has helped the great bear to survive where other species would have perished. The only other animal with such a degree of size difference within the same species is Canis lupus familiaris, the domestic dog. But while the brown bear's "size-range-morphology" is natural, with dogs, man bred freaks. Note: There is no such animal as the "average brown bear"

The size range for females (sows) is from 181 to 318 kg (399 to 701 lb), and for males (boars), it is 272 to 635 kg (600 to 1,400 lb).[2][6] Mature males average 477–534 kg (1,052–1,177 lb) over the course of the year,[7] and can weigh up to 680 kg (1,500 lb) at peak times. Females are typically about 20% smaller and 30% lighter than males,[2] and adult sizes are attained when they are 6 years old. Bears weigh the least when they emerge from their dens in the spring, and can increase their weight by 20–30%[6] during late summer and fall. Captive bears can sometimes attain weights that are considerably greater than those of their counterparts in the wilderness. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodiak_bear

Here is bears of the world. Mature males average from 1000 to 1200 lbs. CHARACTERISTICS The average adult male Kodiak bear stands five feet at the shoulder when on all four and can measure over 10 feet when standing upright. The average male weighs from 1000 to 1200 pounds. Between the springtime when they leave hibernation and the fall, their weight can increase by more than 50 percent. Females are about 20 percent smaller in size and weigh 30 percent lighter than males. Kodiak bears vary in color from beige to dark brown. Although there are Kodiak bears on record for having dimensions measuring larger than that of the polar bears', the polar bear on average is still by far the largest species of bear alive. Bears that die of natural causes live to be 20 to 25 years on average. www.bearsoftheworld.net/kodiak_bears.asp

Some Kodiak bears have been known ( in rare cases ) to reach 5 feet high at the shoulders and stand 10 feet tall. Bart the Bear was just barely short of this. 1000 pound and 1200 pound Kodiak boars are not rare but neither are they average. Remember also, it matters at what season a bear is weighed. The proper time to weigh bears is in the Summer.

Ok but in the fall, the 4 males weighted from 960 to 1345. Also, that chart is from 1969, its very very old, i believe these sites are way more updated. Looks like the average really is closer to 1000 lbs for the 9 year old + males.

This is the only size chart I have been able to locate. Age Class 8-9 years. Does this mean also bears older? A male grizzly is not full-grown until age 9. But as he grows older, he gains weight in muscle.
