brobearIt is very likely that this is the case as the bears are of huge size and hunters specifically look for experienced males due to the skulls normally being bigger overall. I have no doubt that if you were to weigh 100 fully grown Kodiak bears, the average spring weight would be somewhere within the 400-450kg region.

Thank you 'Taker.

This study is from 1975 - 1985. Now consider that the wolf was reintroduced into Yellowstone in 1995 and since then the bears have enjoyed a diet of more meat. At this time the average mature male grizzly ( 9+ years old ) weighed 491 pounds. Probably a tad higher now. The average weight for a full-grown male (12+ years and below 20 years) would be roughly 515 pounds. Notice that the 12 year old and the 17 year old bears are small grizzlies. There will always be a few smaller bears in a group.

I already saw the update Warsaw posted which is a surprise as Grizzly Years by Doug Peacock said that male brown bears grow sexually mature at 4.5 years old but become fully grown between 9 to 10 years old.

I already saw the update Warsaw posted which is a surprise as Grizzly Years by Doug Peacock said that male brown bears grow sexually mature at 4.5 years old but become fully grown between 9 to 10 years old. Well.... no. I had found over on the old extinct shaggygod.proboards.com/ "Grizzly Bear Anatomy" which tells that a brown bear's bones are all fused by age 9. That is where we got the idea from (myself and King Kodiak). Doug Peacock chose to divide the full-grown Montana grizzlies from the young adults with the age of 10. The article in the shaggygod page given here also reads; "...They found that the ultimate spring weight for males was nearly twice that for females, but males took 14 years to reach 95% of this weight while females took only 9 years." Anyway... I've always felt that 9 years was too young for a brown bear to be considered as full-grown. I'm 100% with Warsaw on this. I will add, "seems fitting that the same ages fit also with the gorilla."
