Nice find Kodiak. Yes, from the grizzly scientists are seeking a cure for obesity and possibly diabetes. Also, because ta bite or scratch from a bear, unlike from a cat or a canine, does not become infected, bears are being studied for new antibiotics. Sorry for quoting an old post. I had went through the thread and actually found this account and personally found it interesting. Well done King Kodiak, it shows bears are not all fat. Bears have never got heart attack in their lives even though they bulk up and put on weight for hibernation during winter. Neither do polar bears get heart attack for having a diet of blubber.

Its perfectly fine Oldfossil, you can quote any post you want, does not matter how old it is. And yes, every time i debated with big cat fanboys, and they told me “bears are fat” , i just shoved that report down their necks and thats it. Bears are big and bulky, but not fat or obese. Much less not obese. Bears are adapted to have all the weight they want. Weight and fat are good for bears. They are alot more healthy than big cats. Scientists study grizzly bears to cure obesity. Incredible.

Neither a lion nor a tiger could bear ( no pun intended ) the weight that a bear can carry naturally and easily. Bears have heavy-duty bones and stronger limbs.

That big cat fans argue fiercely as to who the larger cat is, tiger or lion. We know its the tiger of course. Tiger fans will go “but tigers average 600 lbs!!” (Wrong), Or “there was one tiger of 850 lbs!!” What does this mean? its real simple, THEY LOVE WEIGHT AND WISH THEIR FAVORITE CAT WAS AS BIG AND HEAVY AS BEARS. LMAO.

It's a shame that polar bears are losing weight at such an alarming rate.

Bears are definitely for the heavy lifting. Bears bulkier built allows them to sustain a heavier body weight compared to big cats. Captive tigers and lions between 700 to 800 pounds are probably captive and overweight and tire easily. Cats can put up a good fight at parity but will still lose in the end to a bear of similar weight. At upper class weight, 800 pounds and above, polar bears and brown bears will beat beat any big cat including smilodons and other extinct big cats.

If this goes on the polar bears average weight would soon (maybe it already is and I guess it already is) smaller than an average kodiak bear at least and soon would become much lighter.

I will say the same thing that i said about Kodiak bears. As long as we dont see a new weight chart or new info, then the weights remain the same. As of now, its all speculation,

I think any bear with a huge more than 400 pounds than a big cat will win 90% of the time.

I think any bear with a huge more than 400 pounds than a big cat will win 90% of the time. Damn close to 100%... maybe 19 out of every 20 fights; and that because a lion or tiger might get in a lucky bite or paw-swipe.

My intake is that, with a 200 lb advantage, the bear wins 8/9 out of 10.

Agreed. No specifics here, but an Amur tiger weighs on average roughly 400 pounds and the Amur brown bear roughly 600 pounds. They are, on average pretty much at size parity ( although at max the bear is larger ). That 200 pound weight advantage is more than enough to make the male Amur grizzly immune to tiger attacks.

Popular video shows bear out of hibernation in Bigfork BIGFORK, Mont. — Avery Passons thought Saturday was going to be just like any other day, until she spotted a bear along the road in Bigfork. “A bear comes out of the woods, and like, it was crazy!” Passons said. The 13-year-old whipped out her cellphone and began recording. Her mom, Mindi Passons, posted the video to Facebook, and it’s been viewed more than 35,000 times. “I thought this was going to be so cool to show to my friends at school and say, ‘Oh look, the bears are coming out,’” Avery said. As winter ends, bears are starting to wake up and come out of their dens. “We’ve already had reports of black bears in and around the valley,” Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Region 1 education and information program manager Dillon Tabish said. Black bears tend to spend the winter at lower elevations than grizzly bears. Grizzlies usually den at elevations between 6,000 and 10,000 feet, Tabish said. “You can imagine after five to six months of sleeping and not eating that they’re going to be pretty hungry,” Tabish said. “They’ll look for anything they can find that has nutrition in it.” The bear Avery spotted was eating roadkill. Since bears are starting to look for food, Tabish said it’s a good time to put away anything that could attract them. “Garbage, berries, bird feeders, you name it,” Tabish said. “It’s time to start bringing those bird feeders in, cleaning up around the house, making sure there’s no food attractants that bears might find tasty.” nbcmontana.com/news/local/popular-video-shows-bear-out-of-hibernation-in-bigfork
