Post #19 Spotlight: VERIFIED STOMACH CONTENTS : beluga, narwhal, porpoise, seals, and other animals including a dog, horse, reindeer, moose, and white (polar) bear remains. So we have polar bear remains found in the stomach contents of the Greenland sharks. My guess is they might have encountered each other should a polar bear dive into the water to catch a seal.

Unknown; possibly predation and possibly the shark scavenged a polar bear carcass. As a predator, it is a mystery how the slowest of all sharks catches its prey.

/\The Greenland shark is relatively slow for a shark, however, I am sure it is more maneuverable than a polar bear in the waters unless I am missing something.

/\The Greenland shark is relatively slow for a shark, however, I am sure it is more maneuverable than a polar bear in the waters unless I am missing something. Not so sure about this. I read an article once; in a wildlife magazine ( can't remember specifically ). In Africa, bull sharks ( called Zambezi shark in Africa ) are killed by crocodiles. In the Southern U.S.A., they are killed by alligators. According to the article, a shark is fast but not very maneuverable. The shark must swim in a wide circle to return to an antagonist. Unlike the crocodilian, the shark cannot whip around like a reptile. The crocodile or alligator, to put it simply, can easily out-maneuver a shark. *However, I have often wondered how many ( if any ) polar bears are killed by Greenland sharks and orcas? Orca by direct attack while sharks are ambush predators.

Sharks are not as manuverable as their tail fins are vertical. Dolphins and whales on the other hand have horizontal tail fins.

Sharks are not as manuverable as their tail fins are vertical. Dolphins and whales on the other hand have horizontal tail fins. That makes no difference in manuverability. Fish and reptiles both swim with side-to-side motions, but a dolphin is not as flexible as a snake or an eel.

Yes; I know that a dolphin can best a shark ( if size are comparable ), but not because of up-and-down vs side-to-side swimming motions.

Im not too sure on who wins this one but I pick bear. Polar bears have pulled belugas out of their breathing hole and attack them in open waters. Therefore, it is possible.

I once read that polar bears are able to kill whales.

aesopsfables.org/F168_The-Lion-and-the-Dolphin.html The Lion and the Dolphin A lion was roaming on the seashore when, seeing a dolphin basking on the surface of the water, he invited him to form an alliance with him; "For," said he, "as I am the king of the beasts, and you are the king of the fishes, we ought to be the greatest friends and allies possible." The dolphin gladly assented and the lion, not long after, having a fight with a wild bull, called upon the dolphin for his promised support. But when he, though ready to assist him, found himself unable to come out of the sea for the purpose, the lion accused him of having betrayed him. "Do not blame me," said the dolphin in reply, "but blame my nature, which however powerful at sea, is altogether helpless on land."

Dolphins are severely underrated. They might look cute but that hard beak can do a lot of internal damage to an opponent. Oceanic dolphins are hard to kill not only because of their skin but also their blubber to protect their internal organs.

Brown bear vs bull shark... while I would be wishing for the bear to defeat the shark, deep down inside I know that a bear stands little chance. The shark is quick; fast. The shark's scales are smooth only from head to tail; but rubbed the wrong way and they will draw blood. The shark's mouth is filled with razor-blades. Within the constant moving swirling water and sea foam, the shark is not an easy target to see clearly. The shark is in his element.

More polar bears will be eaten by sharks, once they traverse the sea in search of food due to meltimg ice.
They are already udr pressure from tougher browner bears.
A big bear is no different from a big cow, a big chewable area for the shark to chew off a huge chunk.
Mammalian predators like bigcats, bears and wolves are easily killed themselves.
Unlike big crocs with armors.

@tundraeagle
Is there any scientific work dealing with sharks predating on polar bears? A brief google search only led me to one case of a fragmentary jaw of a young polar bear being found in a greenland shark's stomach.
