It looks like polar bear skulls were also used for rituals.
skull, and occasionally the bones as well, before they disposed of them in a sacred place (for details and references see Table 4a. Association of bear carcasses with color in ethnographical bear rituals: before, during, and after the hunt, and during the bear feast (not an exhaustive list). Table 4b). The skull was sometimes painted red or black (Fig. 7). Sometimes even the hunters, trees, or poles were colored (Table 4b). The overviews in Table 4a and 4b make it clear that the main colors selected for the circum- polar bear rituals are red and black. Only one ref- erence was found on the use of another color. Here is a skull comparisson between kodiak and polar, the kodiak has it longer and wider, and probably weights more also.
The kodiak is the right one.
Kodiak Bear (darker skull): length of skull 48 cm, wide of skull 31 cm, length of upper canine tooth 5,6 cm, length of lower canine tooth 4,6 cm.
Polar Bear: length of skull 45,5 cm, wide of skull 29 cm, length of upper canine tooth 5,5 cm, length of lower canine tooth 4,6 cm.

Welcome to the new thread everyone; it will basically serve the same purpose as the size comparisons thread with the slight difference that we are comparing the skulls of different species.
The first comparison is between an average male Ussuri Black Bear (319.9mm in length, right) and an average male Pantanal Jaguar (290.5mm in length, left).

The jaguar might have the stronger jaws but the Asiatic black bear has a larger and stronger skull compared to the largest spotted cat.

To King Kodiak
I don't have any measurements/models of Ussuri brown bear skulls unfortunately, however, I can make a comparison between a grizzly bear skull and a Siberian tiger skull when I'm back home.

King KodiakI managed to dig out some data on the skulls of grizzly bears in British Columbia and found out that they are as long as the skulls of Siberian tigers on average; so here you go: Grizzly Bear (367mm, left) vs Siberian Tiger (367mm, right)

Beautiful Taker, thanks. I love the skulls backround by the way. I know that the grizzly skull is wider and weights more also.

King KodiakBrown bears have extremely dense and heavy bones, their skulls are no exception. At length parity the skull of a brown bear should be heavier than the skull of a lion/tiger.

I've got some big news regarding skull sizes; I managed to dig out a study on the size of Alaskan brown bears and the largest bear in this study apparently was measured having an 18.62 inch skull (473mm). This is a new record and has to be quoted in the future. This is the passage describing it:"Skull dimensions were the least affected by inaccuracies in measuring technique:
The largest captured male (784) was 13 years and the largest captured female (825) was 15 years old. Differences in their respective sizes were as follows: weight, 390-275 kg; height at shoulder, 152-130 cm; total length, 264-228 cm; hind-foot length, 44-38 cm; neck circumference, 90-80 cm; chest girth, 159-157 cm; body length, 140-127 cm; skull length, 473-403 mm; and zygomatic width, 311-251 mm."

Great find, great research there Taker. That is a huge skull. Its actually longer than the largest brown bear skull from Boone and Crockett, the Kodiak bear, which measured 17 15/16 (435 mm). Though The polar bear had a longer skull at 477 mm. But this skull you just found is the overall largest, (length + width).

Result of your conversion: 390 kilograms is equal to 859.80 pounds (avoirdupois) That's a big bear; but there have been bigger.

I see very little difference in size.

Even though the difference is minimal and just slightly above 1cm; it's still interesting to see how the two skulls differ from each other.

brobearFrom what I've seen, I would personally render it closer to the lion. Have a look yourself and compare it with the lion replica in the above comparison.
