"Asian elephants apparently do not tolerate sloth bears in their vicinity. The reason for this is unknown, as individual elephants known to maintain their composure near tigers have been reported to charge bears. The Indian rhinoceros has a similar intolerance for sloth bears, and will charge at them." This really is a mistery. Sloth bears are not "predators", and they are not a threat to elephant calves. So i dont see a reason why elephants would not tolerate sloth bears. Are we sure that phrase from wiki is accurate?Yes, pretty sure because over the years I have read a mention here and a mention there over time while ( I can't explain ) paying little attention to it. ?

eol.org/pages/328075 / domainofthebears.proboards.com/thread/50/sloth-bear-basics Quote from post above: "Sportsmen in India generally either drive patches of jungle or hills, and shoot the bears as they run out, or else mark them down in until morning, and go up to their lair on foot. Elephants are seldom used, they have a great dread of bears, and are but rarely steady with them, and the country is frequently too rough and rocky for the sport.

I always thought the elephant would tolerate the sloth bear more than it does the tiger.

I think its the nature of herbivore that i feels incomfornatable with the presence of a predator nomatter how large is the herbivore as the animal may think that on very opportunity the predator may attack although the predator does not even thinks that. Herbivores of different species can live together with plently food but i think that herbivores normally feel threat from carnivore even the predator is resting.
Sloth bears and tiger are not welcome in elephant or rhino territory. These giants do not fear the bear and big cat rather feel uncomforntable by their presence. May be.

The sloth bear is a predator of termites. He has more in common with the wild boar than with leopards and tigers. I always thought these pachyderms would have less tolerance for big cats which are far more predatory than sloth bears.
