Polk County Minnesota up in NW Minnesota. I've seen a lot of Black Bears in Minnesota but never anything that big...... Well, now when you're out hunting game birds, you know the possibilities. Ain't no Bears where I hunt. But if I came across a big fella like that I would fill my pants.

Reply #17, great find brobear. That is most likely an Eastern black bear (Ursus americanus americanus).

Sadly that 718 pound American black bear killed ☹️. Field Dressed at 718 pounds. How heavy was he before his guts were spilled out?

There is a formula that is used for Deer but not sure if it would apply to Bears or not. It's not exact science but a good estimate. Multiply field dressed weight X 1.26 = Live weight. 718 lbs X 1.26 = 904 lbs. Doesn't seem accurate to me. This is probably more accurate. camper-jim.tripod.com/jimshuntingoutdoorsite/id44.html

I've read that ~20%-25% of the original mass gets lost when dressing the trophy; it was written in some Austrian hunting guide that was lying around in my doctor's waiting room which would make it 850lbs+ for that black bear.

According to Ivan Seredkin the heaviest moon bear was said to have weighed 205 kg. No doubt weighed during the Autumn months. Nevertheless; we have now established one Ussuri brown bear as the record-sized moon bear at 451.95 pounds.
