Continued.... Nevada. Nevada had two outlaw grizzlies. One ranged in the southern part of the state along the Eldorado Mountains near the north rim of the Grand Canyon, just south of Searchlight, Nevada. In 1895 this area, as now, was sparsely populated, but the grizzly raided roaming flocks of sheep and herds of cattle whenever they entered his domain. He killed many deer, mustangs, and some bighorns. The Paiute Indians named him 'The-Evil-Spirit-Bear-Who-Lives-In-The-Rocks' and told many tales about him. It seems an Indian, while hunting on the rocky ledges of the Colorado River Canyon, was killed by the bear. The stockmen called the bear 'Paiute'. He was brought down by a party of mustang runners in 1899 at a chance meeting. They collected #225 which had been placed on his head. Yes, grizzlies hunted and killed mustangs and domestic horses

Continued.... At the other end of the state, Just north of the Bull Run Mountains, lies the Western Shoshone Indian Reservation. Between the Bruneau and the Owyhee River to the south, lies a wild, broken country of gashed land comprising part of the Owyhee River breaks. In 1898, and for several years before and after, this area was the hideout and rendezvous for gangs of rustlers who stole cattle and horses from stockmen in Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon. It was also the home of Slaughterhouse, a stock-killing grizzly that had nomadic tendencies. During the long, hot summer months, the creeks and rivers of this area dry up leaving but few water holes. The bear spent much of his time around these water holes, preying upon bands of wild burros and wild horses that inhabited the breaks, as they came to water. Several times the grizzly was "jumped" and shot at near watering spots. On one occasion he was known to have been injured. The grizzly watched water holes; same as a lion

We know that bears are omnivores and that the grizzly and most bear species are both predator and scavenger.

( in my own words )... We will probably never know if the big male grizzlies that followed the bison herds on the American prairie ever challenged a bull bison. Numerous tales were told by the early pioneers. Some tell of the victorious buffalo; others tell of Old Ephraim killing the "buffer." Just how much truth is in those tells is anybody's guess. We do have evidence that those grizzlies that fed heavily on bison, whether from predation or from scavenging, were some bigger than today's Yellowstone bears. They fed more heavily on meat than today's grizzly. IMO - The grizzly of the early 19th century was likely about 60 or 70 percent carnivorous. The majority of meat consumed, besides prairie dogs, was carrion and carcasses taken by force from wolves. Calves were certainly killed by grizzlies. But, there were likely a small handfull of big dominant boars, ranging from 800 to 1,100 pounds, who would dare to give challenge to a one-ton bull bison. I have no doubt that a big dominant male grizzly that can surpass 1100 pounds can kill a bison but the task is going to be difficult. The bison has a thicker neck compared to other ungulates it seems.

Who is the better scavenger/scavenge more bears or hyenas? I am not sure, spotted hyenas hunt just as much as they scavenge and even rob other carnivores like leopards and cheetahs. According to violent lives of big cats, even striped and brown hyenas rob leopards. Aardwolves, the smallest species eat termites and other insects. Brown bears today eat mostly plants but can be good hunters and more scavengers as well as usurpers. Grizzlies of the past were more carnivorous until most of the animals were wiped out by man.

In my "pet topic" Bears surviving in Africa, we discus bears and hyenas. It is my opinion that, if we introduced grizzlies into S. Africa, a big male grizzly could displace a typical clan of hyenas. But, when the hyenas gather in mass, as they do on rare occasion, from 40 to 80 individuals, then the bear has the intelligence to back off. Both the grizzly and the spotted hyena can therefore share the title of "King of Terrestrial Scavengers."

www.masslive.com/news/2019/04/state-wildlife-officials-all-but-certain-black-bear-killed-small-horse-in-hinsdale.html?fbclid=IwAR02MT8ONxRcBkemDX3pqUIqW0dH26nI1DwykHdy99UrYi4iOQFeMYjHP9k State wildlife officials all but certain black bear killed small horse in Hinsdale HINSDALE — Wildlife officials are all but certain that a black bear killed a small horse in its barn here late last week and dragged it 100 feet out into the yard where it was fed on by coyotes. Kathleen Tench Adams posted on Facebook that the family’s mini-horse was pulled from its stall and killed, apparently by a bear. “We are heartbroken,” she wrote. Andrew Madden, Western District Supervisor for the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, said the incident occurred late Thursday or early Friday. Investigators, arriving on scene, found that the horse had been fed on by coyotes “for quite some time.” Because the horse had been fed on and the ground was frozen at the time of the attack, there is no clear evidence of exactly what had occurred, however, Madden said. “We believe it was killed by a bear, but we can’t say with certainty." It’s unusual for a black bear to go after such a big animal but it’s not unheard of, Madden said, adding investigators believed the horse weighed about 300 pounds. Often times in such situations, the presence of feed is what draws bears into contact with livestock, Madden said. “Usually it’s an opportunistic situation." It’s far more common for bears to go after smaller animals like backyard chickens, he said. Black bears are omnivorous, meaning they typically feed on plants, fruits, honey, nuts, insects, small mammals and carrion. They have also been known to kill young deer or moose calves. Residents need to be aware bears are a prominent part of the landscape in the western and central areas of the state, Madden said. “This is a good opportunity for people to take a look around and realize that they are out there.” Madden said state wildlife personnel have no plans to attempt to track down or move the bear. He said if they start to see repeat instances of a troublesome bear in a particular area they may reevaluate the situation.

JUST IN: VIDEO OF A BROWN BEAR CHASING A HUGE MOOSE IN RUSSIA. (VIDEO INSIDE)
Russian Driver Scares Bear Off From Wild Moose Chase
A moose was filmed cantering down the road in central Russia, followed by a brown bear that was scared off by a honking car.
The video uploaded on social media Monday evening shows the moose running from the bear down an empty road in Khanty-Mansiisk autonomous district.
Further in the distance, the brown bear can be seen stopping in its tracks and escaping from the honking car into the woods.
Readers broke into two camps: those who blamed the video’s authors for leaving the bear hungry and those who applauded them for saving the moose.
Brown bears emerge from months of hibernation in mid-spring.

The man in the car who purposely ruined the grizzly's hunt should have been arrested and fined for "damages done in the wild."

This is indeed exceptionally large female grizzlies to. She is larger than some average male polar bears at 900 pounds.
