LIST of REASONS why the GRIZZLY is KING: 1 - The grizzly along with the cave bear was placed above all other animals by the Pleistocene people of Europe, both Neanderthal and H. sapiens. 2 - Bear cults existed in Europe for tens-of-thousands of years. 3 - The grizzly was the highest ranking animal of ancient Europe and heroes and kings were named to honor the great bear. 4 - The grizzly was the true champion of the ancient Roman Circus Games ( arena animal fights ). 5 - The grizzly ( not the tiger ) is the national animal of Russia. 6 - The Americans Indian tribes honored the grizzly, as a god, as a devil, as an ancestor, as a teacher, as a beast to rule over all others. 7 - Early American pioneers viewed Old Ephraim as a ferocious near-indestructible beast like no other on earth. 8 - Bears are ranked among the smartest animals on earth. 9 - Probably no animal the size of a grizzly is as strong. 10- Bears might have the keenest nose of all animals. 11- Primitive peoples observed bears to learn about foods and medicines.

This is why bears are much more superior than big cats.

BROBEAR....let me add to why bears are the king. Bears dont need special skills, a bear will take your kill by force, like it ir not. all these animals have to hunt for the bears.
the Ussuri brown bear steals 35% of amur tigers kills. the ussuri brown bear steals plenty of amur leopards kills. the yellowstone grizzly bears steals plenty of greys wolves kills. grizzly bears steal about one third of cougars kills.

True. Unlike lions and tigers, the grizzly is not a highly-skilled hunter. But, he is a great fighter. Most grizzly subspecies love to eat meat, therefore a grizzly benefits from having other large predators in his territory. A big cat will chase off or kill other large predators to eliminate the competition. Bears and big cats are very different animals.

Exactly. A bear is a bear, and a big cat is a cat.

The book... THE BEAR - History of a Fallen King - by Michel Pastoureau... gives details of the ancient Roman Circus Games ( animal blood sports ). There were no tigers in the Roman arenas. But, there were lions; most likely the Barbary lion. These lions often fought bears which were always brown bears ( grizzlies ), both European and Atlas bears. I recommend this book to any and all bear enthusiasts.

Are there actual accounts of the fights?

It gives a great over-all account of such fights and details of some. The ancient Romans were the world's highest culture of its day and carefully kept records of such events as their arena games. So, we know without question what animals were winning those fights. The Romans were not biased in declaring the winners; their favorite being the lion. You would also like California Grizzly by Tracy Irwin Storer. This book gives detailed accounts of bull and bear fights and of a lion and bear fight.

I should definatly read those 2 books. We know in the California grizzly book it shows the fight between Ramadam and Parnell, the bear won very quickly the audience did not even know how it happened. If there are records of these battles in rome, it would be very interesting to go and see them, if we can.

You will find false-accounts online, but the version as told in the book, California Grizzly is the truth. Other versions were created online by lion fan'boys, but the book is older than the computer-age. Before the home computer, such topics as wild animal fights were occasionally discussed over a campfire, but never so heated as in today's online warfare. Also, a poster-of-the-past... the great Big Bonns actually saw the real news clipping in a frame hanging on the wall of Sacramento, the state capital of California. Parnell the African man-eating lion was killed quickly by the great Californian grizzly, Ramadam - a fact.

Yes of course, that book account is more valid than the other versions that said Parnell won. Ramadam did win, and by ko. I wish bonns would have taken a pic.

Russian firms, or holligans, are the most feared and strong today of all of Europe. some firms have the Ussuri brown bear as their banner.

Throughout all of Europe, prior to the years spanning from 1000 AD to 1200 AD ( depending on location ), the bear was the king of beasts; the most honored of all creatures. The two most often seen emblems ( on shields, banners, etc ) were the bear and the boar. To be given a name associated with the bear was a great honor. King Arthur - the bear king. Arthur means bear. Beowulf - means bee-hunter which was a nick-name for the bear. There were many others. Richard the Lion-Hearted was one of the first kings given a name honoring the lion.

Q - Why do you think the bear started to lose it's prestige? I see more people in this day and age honoring big cats? Why the shift? You must read - THE BEAR, History of a Fallen King. The switch began with... Charlemagne (c.742-814), also known as Karl and Charles the Great, was a medieval emperor who ruled much of Western Europe from 768 to 814. The CHURCH declared war against the bear. For about 1,000 years all of Europe was at war against the bear. The only bear in Europe ( after the Pleistocene ) is the grizzly. This could ( and did ) take up a book to tell... but the lion was "hand-picked" by the Church as a replacement animal for the bear. The lion became the "Kong of Beasts" ( depending on location ) from the years 1000 AD to 1200 AD. As for today... watching a lion or a tiger stalk a buffalo is more exciting than watching a grizzly catch a salmon.
